Bluefield State Basketball 2025
The 2025 season kicked off in November of 2024. Bluefield State fell to a 1-8 start with up and down temp games where tons of points were scored. The team played home and away games. They were exciting and fast on offense, confident on the field.
Early wins against the likes of Wheeling and Concord for The Big Blue. They also took on teams from states with top level talent such as West Lib. Big Moments of Bluefield State Basketball 2025
What followed was a roller-coaster 2025 season for the Bluefield State men’s basketball team. They played physical, scored points, and at times the fans actually had something to be excited about. This year, in the CIAA conference that they rejoined it felt different and refreshing even. They showed heart in just about every game.
Here’s a rundown of everything that happened this season from big victories to top performances, and more.
Season Start and First Wins
It was in November 2024 that the season began. Bluefield State came out fast. They played Wheeling and got a victory at home scoring in the 100s. The team had energy, and the crowd was loud. There were many games close, but the Big Blue continued to win.
They did, however, face quality teams from outside the conference. And when they found a way to lose, as they did so often last fall, it usually wasn’t without first emptying the tank. The team stayed tight and began to get their mojo on.
Big Games and Scores
This season, by my numbers, the team played about 30 games. A few were hard, but most were fun. They won big in the friendly confines and out on the road. Let’s take a look at those five marquee matchups still to come:

CIAA Tournament Run
Bluefield State was prepared when the CIAA tournament arrived. They took Johnson C. Smith in the opening round. Scoring over 20 points, guard Jordan Hinds was on a tear. But they wound up beating No. 1 seed Fayetteville State in the semifinals.
They advanced to the championship game with the win. The final was tough. The team played well in the season-opening game but fell to Virginia State. Even so, the point was that he had managed to get there. Bluefield was in only its second year back in the CIAA and there was no way anyone could have seen that kind of run coming so quickly.
Players Who Shined
Several memorable names surfaced during the season. Under the basket, Shainen Carter was a beast. He rebounded, he blocked shots. And he produced an inordinate amount of 20-plus point games. Rell Williams was another great player who provided shot making and defense.
The team all played together well. They had a natural chemistry that was obvious on the court.
What’s Next for Big Blue
Winter gave people hope they played better than the majority of people had anticipated. For now, Hoehn has built something solid, and fans are looking forward to the 2020 season.
Strengthened by the returns of center Spencer Hawes and point guard Kyle Weaver, WSU took a giant step forward last year and could make another one if it keeps all its pieces together. Hell maybe even win the CIAA title next time. Either way, 2025 was a monumental season for the basketball team at Bluefield State.
